With its political agenda increasingly shaped by rearmament in response to Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, by competitiveness pressures driven by China’s growing technological prowess, and by geopolitical fragmentation in the wake of the antics of US President Trump, it’s time for the EU to take a long, hard look at itself in a mirror already clouded by climate and – increasingly – demographic change. Is the Union sufficiently strong and resilient to stand up to these challenges? Looking back at 2025 and the start of the von der Leyen II Commission presidency, it is clear that the times are changing fast and irreversibly, and that Europe needs to get its act together.
